Arenal Volcano

It’s the postcard that put Costa Rica on your list.

That near-perfect cone, wrapped in rainforest, is the most recognized volcano in the country — and the whole reason La Fortuna exists as a traveler’s town. You don’t climb it (the crater is off-limits, for good reason), but you walk the forest and old lava flows right at its base, swim in a volcano-fed lagoon, and get as close to the colossus as anyone safely can. It’s the icon, up close — and the anchor of the Costa Rica Triangle: four of your nine nights are spent underneath it.

A textbook cone that spent decades erupting before settling into rest in 2010 — still one of the most striking sights in the country.

Forest trails wind across old volcanic terrain with the cone looming in front of you — the view that’s worth the trip on its own.

Cool off in Lake Tabacón at the volcano’s foot — swim, kayak or paddleboard with the giant watching over you.

We route you through a private eco-park, not the busiest gate, so it feels like the rainforest, not a line.

Arenal makes its own clouds; we time your visit for the clearest window and never hang the whole trip on one view.

The town of La Fortuna sits on the eastern side of Arenal Volcano, famous for its almost perfect conical shape and, for decades, for being one of the most active volcanoes in Costa Rica. Lush rainforest climbs its slopes, natural hot springs pool at its base, and nearly every adventure you can name is within a short drive. It’s one of the country’s must-see corners — and the place we built our whole company around. It’s also where the Costa Rica Triangle begins: four nights here before the road climbs into the Monteverde cloud forest and drops to the Pacific.

For hundreds of years the volcano lay quiet. Then, in 1968, it erupted without warning, reshaping the landscape and burying miles of countryside in lava. It stayed mildly active for decades — visitors once watched glowing rivers of lava light up the night — until it slipped into a resting phase in 2010. The crater has been off-limits to climbers ever since, for safety, but the rainforest, trails and viewpoints around its base are open, spectacular, and completely safe with a guide.

The experience itself unfolds in a private eco-park about ten kilometers from La Fortuna, tucked at the foot of the volcano amid rainforest, old lava and the magical Lake Tabacón. Your guide leads you along a variety of forest trails for a genuine close encounter with the giant, points out the wildlife and plants that have reclaimed the lava, and gives you the lagoon to cool off in — swim, kayak or simply sit and take in the cone reflected on the water. It’s unhurried, deeply scenic, and built around the volcano rather than rushed past it.

A word of honesty: Arenal is one of the cloudiest peaks in the country, and the summit comes and goes by the hour. That’s exactly why we plan your volcano day for the most likely clear window — and why your trip never rides on a single view. Even wrapped in cloud, the lava trails, the lagoon and the rainforest are unforgettable, and there’s real magic in watching the clouds part to reveal the cone.

We usually pair the volcano with the La Fortuna Waterfall on the same day, so you tick off the region’s two icons in one well-paced loop. It’s built into every Destitrip trip.
